Converting Fractions to Decimals

Definition: The process of writing a rational number in decimal number form.

Fractions and decimals are both parts of a whole. There are many fractions you can convert to decimals that are easy to memorize (like 1/4= 0.25). If you come across a fraction that is not common, you can divide the numerator by the denominator to convert it into decimal form.

Here are some common fractions converted to decimals:

 

Example: Convert 3/8 to a decimal.

Step 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator. Thus, divide 3 by 8.

Step 2: Since 8 cannot go into 3, write a 0 and the decimal point

Step 3: Add a 0 to the right of the dividend and divide

Step 4: Repeat Step 3.

3/8 = 0.375
