Finding Y Intercept

Definition: This is the process of finding where the graph cuts the y-axis.

Example: Find the y-intercept of the function y = 3x + 2.

Solution:

Step 1: Look at the equation! Here the constant is 2 thus the y-intercept is 2 with coordinates (0, 2).

OR

Step 1: Since the y-axis lies on x = 0, x = 0 at all points on the y-axis, thus substitute x = 0 (or 0 for the independent variable).
Here we have y = 3(0) + 2.

Step 2: Solve for y (or the dependent variable).
y = 0 + 2
y = 2
Coordinates (0, 2)
