Scientific Notation

Definition: Scientific Notation is a special way of writing very large or very small numbers. It is called scientific notation because scientists often use very big or very small numbers. By using exponents, we can reformat these numbers so they are easier to work with.

Example: How do you write 7 million in scientific notation?

Step 1: Remember, in scientific notation, you always start out with a base number. In this example, the base number is 7.

Step 2: So we need to ask ourselves, 7 x ___ equals 7,000,000?

Step 3: Start at the left most zero and count places until you get to 7- you should have 6 places. Therefore, 7,000,000 can be written as 7 x 10^6
