Quotient Rule

Quotient Rule Let f(x) and g(x) be differentiable functions. Then:

Quot1

Note that, for points where g‘(x)=0, the above derivative is undefined.

Example: Find the derivative of  Quot2

Just like before, we first notice that if we choose f(x)=tan(x) and g(x)=cos(x), then Quot3.  We take the derivative of each function:

f'(x) = sec2(x)          g'(x) = 1

Then using the quotient rule, we obtain:

Quot4
