Parallel Lines

Definition: Parallel lines are lines in the same plane that never intersect and stay the same distance apart. On a coordinate plane, parallel lines have the same slope.

Example: Identify the pair of parallel lines:

We know parallel lines never continue forever without intersecting. Using this information we can identify which pair of lines is parallel.

Step 1: Compare the given pairs of lines.

Step 2: Since pairs 2, 3 & 4 intersect or will intersect when extended in both directions, we can determine pair 1 to be the best answer.

Option 1 best fits our definition of parallel lines.
